He traveled with me this past weekend to Artistic Figures in Cloth (AFIC) 2011, in Columbus, Ohio. Hare was my entry in the "Look Ma, No Doll Stand!" Challenge. The challenge was to create a doll with no obvious doll stand or support to make it stand. Hare was wet and needle felted of Merino wool, with a crocheted back satchel. He is running on wooden wheels, racing away from someone's garden with a stolen carrot tucked away in his satchel. The little rascal run head long into a 3rd place ribbon in the competition! Ok. I am a little puffed up at the moment. I am very lax in maintaining my blog. This has prompted my cohort in doll making crime, Chris Fondi, to pose the question, "Joyce, are you ever going to post something new?" OK, Ms Fondi, here ya go.
I've been busy with several artistic things, the biggest of which is developing a body of work for a 3-woman art doll exhibit that Chris and I and Emily Eckel hope to have in the near future. You can watch our progress over at http://pursuethemuse.blogspot.com/. I create v-e-r-y s-lo-w-l-y. At a snail's pace. The dolls are not popping out easily. And, Artistic Figures in Cloth (AFIC) is at the end of April in Columbus, Ohio. There are plans to be made and dolls to have ready for that adventure as well.
In the middle of all of that, my studio ceiling was water damaged from a roof leak in 2009 and a big portion of it needed to be replaced. Uh, yup. Everything had to come out of the studio. Which leaves me, my art supplies and my half created dolls in the living room, much to my family's chagrin.
Thinking that we could add even more fun and frivolity to all of that, I decided perhaps it would be jolly good fun to take my barely used sewing machine out of hiding so I could learn to sew. (Emily and Chris gasp...really? learn to sew?) As far as I am concerned, the darn thing may as well be a car engine. I haven't a clue where to start. I can thread the needle, plug it in and put my foot on the pedal to make it go...and that's it. Period. Stay tuned. I will keep you up to date on the progress but remeber I go very slowly, at a snail's pace.

Pax is Completed!!

Long overdue but here at last, is Pax. This needle felted guy is my contribution to the Peace Felt exchange that occurred in September of 2010. As an animal lover, I have been particularly distressed by the plight by the wildlife in the Gulf. But what to do? Our family has boycotted BP, buying our gas elsewhere but that seems so little and indirect.
Craft Hope, in conjunction with several environmental organizations, sponsored a project that offered an opportunity for those of us who crochet, knit or sew to be of more direct help. Wash rags and hand towels are needed to clean oil from dolphins and sea turtles. These were collected and sent to the coast, along with some donations of Dawn dish detergent.

Currently, as of 7-20-2010 the project has been suspended as the needs have been met. I plan to keep my eyes an ears open in case I can jump in and help. To keep up to date on this project you can go to the following link: http://crafthope.com/2010/06/project-8-gulf-coast-oil-spill/.

Craft Hope offers many wonderful ideas and projects for all kinds things that can help your fellow Earthling, be it man, animal or plant! If you decide to help with any of these projects, leave me a comment here. I'd like to hear about it.

Cecily, Serpent of the Sherbet Sea

Meet Cecily, the latest Dooflinky creation. One of them is love of felting and fiber art. Another is the desire to do something good in the world. When I read about Peace Felt 2010, it seemed like the perfect marriage of these things. Peace Felt is working to encircle the world in a gesture of love & peace in observance of The International Day of Peace on September 21, 2010. Felted items will be made and exchanged with others throughout the world. Please click the button to the left to see how you can particpate. She is a wet felted/needle felted art doll composed of various types of wool roving and a few silk petals. I am not certain exactly where Leticia may fall on a list of species, these dolls do take on wills and shapes of there own. She does, however, have an important role out there in the art world. Leticia will be donated to the Pink Artist Project which is working for the second year to raise funds for the Susan G Komen Fund for breast cancer research.
I have created this doll with special women in mind. My aunt, Leila Rae Herold, who after battling breast cancer and winning, succumbed earlier this year due to complications from Parkinson's Disease. She bravely and courageously waged many battles with health issues and is deeply missed. Laura Wunderly and Wanda Dietrich, breast cancer survivors, are two very special friends from my church family. Both Laura and Wanda endured surgery and what seemed like endless treatments and fought the cancer with great poise, grace and faith. I snatched this photo right from your site, yep I stole it, so I thank yu. And special thanks for the tres' faboo classes you taught at AFIC, (Artistic Figures in Cloth). Cody is a treasure and if you haven't checked out his site, run right over and take a gander. Click on his name in the column on the left to go to there. Incredile talent and he's just one of the nicest folks you could ever want to meet!
I took 2 classes taught by Cody at AFIC earlier this month. I called this doll, "Decay of Society", and was made "her" in Cody's "Wire, Myth and Magic" class. The class explored using wire armatures and artistist's mediums in assemblage doll making. (Cody, correct me if I've described it poorly.) The doll hearkens back to some of my earlier statement dolls. For me it represents how we may end up one day if we don't learn a gentler way to live in a world with others of differing opinions, cultures and attitudes, if we don't learn how to respect one another, if we fail to love our neighbors (OK, everyone you know, or don't know, is your neighbor). We must spend wisely, live greener, litigate less, (a lot less), volunteer more, love more, and most importan, we must pray more.
This doll won't be everyone's taste. It's certainly a far cry from Calliope. She's about using art to make a statement and not to look pretty. Indulge me in that, please.

Decay is made of found objects, bone, beads, cloth.

Caroline's Fairy becomes...Calliope!

I have been absent a very long time. A broken foot and a multitude of other perceived barriers have kept me away. But I am back, and with things to show you!

At long last, Caroline's Fairy has been completed. I had a terribly hard time getting her done when my dear friend, Diane, noticed I seemed not to be connected to this doll. Perhaps because I knew ahead of time that she would go away to live elsewhere. And also perhaps because I chose not to name her. Interesting thoughts. About 4 weeks ago, I sat on the couch, the fairy in hand, and all of a sudden the word/name Calliope popped into my head. "She's Calliope!" My family all gave me one of "those" looks. You know the one, the "by golly, the crazy artist really is crazy" looks. I was off and running and the fairy was born. I hope you enjoy her. She is off to live now with Caroline, who is about to celebrate her 1st birthday.

Stitch and Bitch Saturdays

Once a month, a group of Pittsburgh doll makers and fiber artists gather for a few hours of creating. This generally involves good food and a lot of laughs as well as creative support and the occasionally venting of whatever may be happening in our lives. (that would be the bitching part of the Stitch & Bitch!) Occasionally, we go for a full twelve hour session with folks floating in and out throughout the day. We all met at Emily's this weekend. Here we are; sharing the day. Get a look at this fabulous Curry Cauliflower & Potato Soup Em served. I imagine so. I am not an expert on fairies but this guy is my idea of a fairy gone to the dark side. I created him in a recent needle felting class at the Society for Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh. I picked up a lot of new skills and another doll came to life. As I created him I realized that it will be one of the 4 dolls I am making (forever!) for the online Barb Kobe class I'm taking. I think it screams for some rusty, jagged embellishment so check back . I've included some sketches, too, something I only started doing in my doll making.

And, let's go ahead and count this one as part of the 100 Art Doll Challenge. Geez, I better get moving!

Crusher continued, almost there

Crusher seems to be taking his sweet time to "become". So...here it is, a whole new profile and almost finished. He still needs his eyes and some de-fuzzing. And there will locks down his spine. Keep looking here, he'll keep showing up. I suffer from chronic depression and have been slogging through a new bout. Having been here before I was able to recognize it coming, but I still fell into a space of wanting to do nothing but sleep. Creating was on the back burner. A bad place for me to be, creating is vital to my emotional well being. It is part of who and what I am. Cutting it off is like cutting off a limb. I need it to stay in tact. Fortunately, one afternoon I looked down and saw my pile of wool and felting needles and the need to create lifted me up above depression long enough to begin a new felted project. I suspect my muse has been working overtime trying to wake me up! Orange Crusher is the result of the new call from the muse. I am posting pics of his progress so far, he has a ways to go but he's far enough along that I am ready to share him. This is my first attempt at a fantasy type character, he sort of popped out as I find dolls will do. He is needle felted wool roving over a wire armature. You can see in the photos I have used stuffing wool under the colored roving to build up the under structure.

Villamanga Class Assemblage Dolls

Earlier this year, I took an Assemblage Doll class at the Society for Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh with Robert Villamanga. These dolls are the result. Check out Robert's site if you get a chance, really great assemblage work.
The first doll has a flattened tin can head with a pair of earrings for eyes. Her legs are some great sticks I found somewhere along the way.
The coat hanger doll was made from found objects, old keys, and a splash of paint. These were great fun to make from things that were just laying around.
The doll at the far right was created in the same class by my good friend Emily Eckel.

Isla's Ruth

I' ve had the great honor of teaching the same class of Sunday School students for 6 years. The students have given me a great of spiritual joy, always in their innocence, givng me a different way of looking at things. For the last three years my Sunday School class has ended it's year with a project. Each student is asked to choose a favortie biblical person, write a bit about that person and make a doll to represent them. The first year was my idea, the last two, to my delight, the students have asked to make the dolls. It is such a pleasure and joy to share my love of art and dollmaking while I teach about the love Christ. This doll is "in progress", you can see she still hasn't been given a head! (time runs short in a 45 minnnute class.) This is the work of nine-year-old, Isla, a bright young lady with many talents. Her doll is Ruth from the Old Testament story of Ruth and Naomi, a class favorite. When Ruth gets a head, sometime this week, I'll post the finished doll. Ruth appears by kind permission of Miss Isla. Thanks, Sweetie. Teaching you has been a wonderful part of my life!

Medicine Doll Class-Guardian doll

Here's another look at my Guardian Doll in progress. She sat for awhile, waiting to become. I guess like I often do. I wait for God to shine a light a little further out than the tip of my toes to make a move. With God and with dolls, it doesn't really work that way, at least not for me. I need to pick myself up and make my feet move even if it is into the unknown places that God has yet to reveal to me. The doll must be picked up, held, and worked on, allowing the muse to show you the way. The purpose of this doll is to be my guardian through the process of exploring old anger and that hasn't yet been resolved and to help me to break through to the artist who longs to burst forth. I must trust the artistic process and know that God has provided this outlet to also further explore my spirituality.

My dog ate my doll work...

Ah, the adorable dog, Donald. He's turned into Donald Destructo! I had such high hopes when he breezed through obedience classes with flying colors. He decided Wednesday morning to have at it with three unbaked, polymer doll heads. Took me hours to sculpt and only a few seconds for Donald to undo it all. Never willing to get let good work go for naught, I've decided I will use these heads anyway, with only minor repairs and somewhere along the way they will become full fledged dolls with sad tales to tell. As for Donald, he's in the proverbial doghouse. Not to worry he's so charming he won't be there long.! He came to live with us in January, an adoptee of the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society, http://www.wpahumane.org/ We fell in love almost instantly when we saw him there and it didn't take long before we gave him a home. He lives along side our other dog and two cats. Donald is a frisky, boxer mix, intelligent and very much a "people" dog.

Planning on acquiring a pet? Check your local shelter or Humane Society. While the deadline is it is not the thrust of meeting the deadline that drives the challenge. In their words, "The challenge is to learn about themselves and to set intentions for their lives, using art-doll-making as a tool." Way Cool! Read a press article about it here: http://www.myartself.com/stacey/pdf/100_artdollschallenge.pdf
Have a look and sign up! Don't make dolls? Go ahead and make 100 of something else. Enjoy!

This doll is Birdie, one of my first few dolls. I was able to do some meaningful journal work for my Medicine Doll class with Barb Kobe. I had seemed to be really blocked about getting down to this. I went home from work so angry and aggravated yesterday. A friend was coming for dinner and I knew I just wasn't in a place of mind where I could socialize. I stole away to the bedroom for half an hour just to be quiet. The journal was right there, on the edge of the bed. I seized it. I wrote. I ranted. I cried. Anger. I hadn't been this angry in a long time and all of a sudden I realized how I, probably like so many others, have been programmed not to express anger. I began writing the story of how I came to this place of wanting to create healing dolls. My locked away artist. My descent into depression. A spiritual call. Brilliant red of anger. Calming green of healing.Complimentary colors staring at each other from opposite sides of the emotional color wheel.
My intention in taking this class is this: "To accept the anger that I know is a part of my god-fiber, move through it and allow creative and spiritual healing to take place." I know I will never be without anger. But I can look at it square in the face, know it is part of how I am wired, use it for good when possible, and still use my God-given creative ability to heal myself . Salve for the wounds, not removal of them. Heavy Sigh!.
I took some photos of the journal work. I will post them soon. The first two dolls for the class have become awake in my mind and are no longer far away.
This photo is a close up of "My Depression". She reminds me of the pain and anger I felt during the worst part of my own depression.

Harmony Boxes and the importance of balance

Having a very technical, nuts and bolts job, I use my artistic skills and sense of spirituality to offset and balance that out. Here are two of the dolls I've made using Deborah's wet felting technique. These dolls are also the style she taught us. I made Imogene in class, No-name (I hate it when dolls won't introduce themselves!) I made later on. Watch for more of my felted dolls. And check out Deborah's site, take a class if you can! Better photos to come!)

Crochet Craze

My mother has crocheted for as long as I can remember. With some minor medical problems, the recent holidays, switching my studio from one room to another and a home computer slowly leaking life, blogging has not been easy. But things are back on track and with DSL in my very near future (at last!) I should be a lot more active here!
I have been busy with my dolls. One of the things I've just begun is an online class that is an incredible journey into healing dolls and self discovery. Barb Kobe conducts the class. Please go and check out her web site. http://www.barbkobe.com/ She's an amazing doll artist and creativity coach. Her class is very different from all the "learn to make a doll"classes that are out there. Those are all great in their own right. Barb's class goes very deep into your artistic soul and helps you to look inside and discover ways to use doll making as a way of transforming and healing various aspects of your life. Every doll, from all the participants, is of their own style and design using whatever medium seems to fit the doll at hand. I already feel artistically stretched and I'm only beginning. I've been going to bed at night only to discover future dolls lining up for their turn to come to life. I guess that means I will post some photos of my work with this class soon!

What do we leave our children?

When I was creating this doll, digging through all my rusty bits and pieces, I had pause to think of what we do to our world. It was a dark and painful time, often even manifesting in physical pain. Working through it, understanding it and finding ways to deal with it unlocked a lot of things for me. One of those things was my creativity. It had been locked away and hidden for many years. This doll represents the pain that depression caused for me. This is a doll I'll never sell. She is a reminder to me of how far I've come in life.

"My Depression" is an altered porcelain doll, covered in polymer clay and adorned with rusty items and found objects.

Thistle Gets a Home

Silent Thistle, who has been sitting on my mantle for several months, will soon be leaving for a new home. Not catchy enough, not clever enough, too cute, too obscure. Finally I quite trying to figure one out.
Enter my dear mom. Mom uses the word "dooflinky" all the time when a name or a word just won't come to her.
According to SlangSite.com dooflinky (doo-fling-kee) is defined as: A word used for any noun that is not a person. As I was drifting off to sleep one night, in my head I heard my mother say "dooflinky". The Muse (and my mother) had spoken. The name was born. I like it as a tip of the hat to Mom and a perfect name for dolls that I couldn't categorize as one thing or the other.
This doll: Penelope Copper, polymer clay face and fabric scraps.

Here I am!

Here I am! After toying with the idea for a very long time, I've decided to venture intot he world of blogging.
